New: Strontium titanate facet rough in five colors! See the link in my profile for the Etsy listing! Strontium Titanate is an old classic in the gem world, and was once sold under the name 'fabulite'. It was marketed as a diamond stand-in, but it is so much brighter and more dispersive than diamond that it really works better as a gem all its own. In the end CZ ended up displacing it since it was so much cheaper to grow, and strontium titanate was relegated to a rare curiosity, and facet rough has been very hard to get. It does, however, have some uses in industry as a substrate (similar to BGO, lithium niobate and lithium tantate) so there is still a bit of production. We were able to get a variety of colors from one of these industrial suppliers (though these varieties are likely a side-line meant for gem usage rather than directly made for industry). We were able to get rough in colorless, yellow, orange, red, purple and blue. Purple in particular is quite unusual and is likely a more recent innovation and had only been offered in cut stones previously. Cleaning my titanium jigsaw puzzles 🧩 after assembling them allows the natural titanium oxide to interact properly with light to reveal the vivid anodized colors. The natural oils of your fingers add to the thickness of the oxide layer and will temporarily mute the colors until the oils are removed. Cleaning is as simple as a drop of water and a microfiber. A drop of glass cleaner like windex may also help if a smudge is persistent. When anodizing my puzzles with specific voltages and amounts of current in a water bath, I control the thickness of the oxide layer that interacts with light and therefore the color without adding any pigments or dyes to the surface. The effect is much like the colors you get from the thickness changes in the surface of a soap bubble. Titanium is such a beautiful material ❤️ and was the natural choice to make my Lazels puzzles. #satisfying #art #artist

On the left from top to bottom: Napthol Red -Michael Harding oil paint Perylene Red -Gamblin oil paint Alizarin Claret -Michael Harding oil paint On the right from top to bottom: Nickel Titanate Yellow -Michael Harding oil paint Secret guest color: Alizarin Claret - Langridge oil paint Pthalocyanine turquoise -Michael Harding oil paint Each of the reds on the left are translucent or semi-translucent The yellow on the right is an opaque color so as it mixes with each of the reds, the quality of the red is more revealed We get to see how unique and different each one is The results of the primary mixtures is quite wonderful because that yellow is not as effective as other more chromatic yellows With the first secret guest color mixing into that primary mixture, we have some surprising results In all three instances, the secondary mixtures wind up being quite neutralized when mixed with the neon green If you look at each secondary mixture, the top one is cool. The middle one is warm and the bottom one is cool. When we refer to color in terms of temperature, it is always relative to what’s going on around it Any given color does not have a permanent warm or cool attribute it changes, depending on circumstances That can also include the perception of color, it too, can change depending on circumstances It’s a really crazy thought, right?! With the last guest color, Phthalo turquoise, it literally does reintroduce chroma back into the tertiary mixtures It’s mostly visible in the second and third mixture It’s always fun to push and pull the attributes that make up hue value chroma while mixing oil paints Enjoy playing with your paints!
