Why is the lizard running on two legs? According to the National Geographic, some species of lizards will rear up on their hind legs, particularly when running. For example, South American basilisks can move so quickly on their hind legs that they can even run on water 🌊 A University of Cambridge a team have the answer to why: it’s a fluke of physics: They filmed 16 species of Australian dragon lizards running on a treadmill. The videos revealed that as some species accelerate, they shift their centre of gravity backwards. Many species, especially burrowing frogs, use their strong hind legs to rotate their bodies like little drills, scraping and kicking dirt away as they twist. This spinning motion helps them get deeper without having to move forward head-first, which would be slower and harder. They usually do this to escape heat, avoid predators, or stay moist during dry seasons, turning the soil into a safe, cool, and damp hiding place.
