Topping your trees is not a good idea! Topping is done to reduce the size of the tree’s crown without regard to its health. Sadly, despite research and best management practices discouraging this practice, it is still common in landscapes today. If you want to reduce the size of your tree, consider hiring a knowledgeable ISA-certified arborist to do a “crown reduction prune”. This method slowly reduces the tree’s crown in a way that’s much easier for the tree to handle. For more information about why topping a tree is not a good idea, visit these resources: - https://extension.psu.edu/tree-topping-the-cost-is-greater-than-you-think - https://www.johnson.k-state.edu/lawn-garden/agent-articles/trees-shrubs/tree-topping.html Topping is similar, but not the same as a pruning technique known as pollarding. It differs in a few ways. Pollarding a tree: - usually starts at a young age, when the tree is more vigorous and more tolerant of stressors. - involves the continued maintenance and care of resprouts, and the formation of nubs at the end of the heading cuts. These nubs are allowed to seal and they are not removed. Whereas, topping a tree: - usually occurs when a tree is mature and is typically too old to handle a stressor of this scale. - involves no follow up or maintenance of resprouts. - is usually done to reduce the size of the tree instead of abiding by a specific pruning system. Lastly, this information comes from the International Society of Arboriculture’s Certified Arborist textbook, and has been extensively studied by scientists and tree researchers. Despite this, topping remains a common practice in many areas of the world, especially with particular species like Crepe Myrtles. Just because it “works” for some species, does NOT make it an acceptable practice across the board, especially with so much evidence against it. #trees #tree #topping #top #treetopping #arborist #urbanforestry #plants #treepruning #pruning #prune #forestry #treecare #arboriculture #certifiedarborist #treeworker #nature #ISAarborist #arboristsofinstagram

The only trees that deserve "topping" are invasive trees like Eucalyptus, Russian Olive, Tree of Heaven, Salt cedar, and - a hint at my next video - London planetree.

Please read before you judge ☺️ This branch, although being huge, was pruned by my neighbour from his hundred years old magnolia tree. He has to prune it every once it a while to keep the pathway unblocked. One day I passed by and saw that some branches lying on the ground. I asked him if I can take one of the branches and he was like: “Oh yeah, take all of them”. It would save him a trip to the composting facility ☺️ After this reel went viral and sparked quite a heated debate, I spoke with my neighbour (he is a 70 year old man who spent all his life living off the land) and he was like: “They never saw magnolia before? How could that happen?” 😂 In the countryside, in my region, it feels like almost every house has one Magnolia tree. And of course apple, cherry, pear, chestnut.... In Germany, heavy pruning is prohibited from early March to the end of September. So if you go ask the neighbours if they prune their fruit tree, you can have a lot of fresh-cut branches, bring them indoors, add them to a vase filled with fresh water to force the flowers to bloom and brighten up your home during the gloomy winter weeks ☺️

Andrew’s dissectum was a late shaping that catches it just before a possible snowy or extra wet winter here in the PNW. Thinning and shaping allows leaves to fall through, lightens long laterals and reduces density on the crown (which is often where dissectums break with heavy snow). NEVER use a broom or take to remove heavy snow! Using a leaf blower gently from underneath is the way to go! Dissectums are delicate a rather brittle trees, especially in colder temps, so being gentle and careful is vital. Let’s hope La Niña doesn’t bring wet snow this year but we shall see. SUCH an amazing tree and a beautiful client family😊🍁😊 Thank you Andrew! 😊🍁😊 . . . #japanesemaple #acerpalmatumdissectum #maple #maplelove #blissgardenconcepts #japanesemaples #dissectum #treescience #treecare #treelover #treelovers🌳 #perfecttree #fallpruning #pruning #pruningseason #pruningtrees #pruningtime #treeart #treeartists #trees #treeservice #treeservices 🍁🍁🍁
