I’m carving a torso. This is pretty much how I do it. Except I was carving faster - trying to keep things interesting. And I wish I could zoom in but IG won’t let me. 🙄 Also I tend to move around a lot - switching over to my carving stand when needed. For this video I couldn’t do it, so it’s not exactly how I usually carve. But you get the idea. 💪🤓🛠️ #carving #basswood #torsos

Today’s quote from Starhawk said exactly what I wanted. I am committed to creating balance in my life. It is especially important during this time of unbalance and chaos. My ceramic sculpture We Are Cyborgs Too, portrays my effort to communicate balance -degrees of positive and negative aspects- of contemporary issues. I chose images of existing cyborgs and theoretical cyborgs to render inside the columns of the 18” tall ceramic torso to illustrate my perception of cyborgs. I appropriated two paintings from women Renaissance artists. Lavinia Fontana’s painting, Minerva Dressing, c. 1613 is a beautiful full figured form that was perfect for my narrative of a female cyborg with augmented legs. People (including military personnel) who have lost the use of their limbs now lead normal lives because of medical technological intervention. Orsola Maddalena Caccia, Birth of the Virgin, c.1635, illustrates two examples of cyborgs in society. The first is the pervasive use of cell phones to document important (and everyday) events. Honey was among the 2,350 people whose remains were sent to the body donation program at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in #FortWorth. However, a month after his death, the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Officer deemed Honey's body 'unclaimed' after they said phones for relatives were disconnected even though his ex-wife and two adult children were living in the state. Honey's body was kept in a freezer before it was cut up and shipped piecemeal across the country. His torso was sold to a medical education company for $900; his right leg shipped to a Swedish medical device manufacturer for $341; the bones from his #skull were sent to the U.S. Army for $210 for military training purposes. Victor Carl Honey, 43, a dedicated Army veteran who struggled with mental illness, died in September 2022 of heart failure.
