Tower Hamlets is a borough in East London where 86% of councillors are of Bangladeshi heritage. Last year, serving British councillors were caught skipping their own council meetings, missing more than half their scheduled appearances, because they were in Bangladesh campaigning for seats in the Bangladeshi parliament. Residents came forward saying they couldn't get answers on housing, waste, and antisocial behaviour because their elected representative was on the other side of the world running for office in another country. The UK government called it "unacceptable." The council's response? UK law doesn't actually stop a British councillor from also running for parliament in a foreign nation. Think about that. You elect someone to fix potholes and sort housing in your borough. They take the salary, hold the title, and spend their time campaigning for votes in Bangladesh. This is not a diversity story. An ex london assembly member has told us Labour may use postal votes to cheat the system in May. When the last local elections 54 people were registered at 1 flat in Tower Hamlets. All Asian names.
