The development of Toy Story 2 was famously chaotic, starting as a low-budget direct-to-video project before Disney upgraded it to a theatrical release. During production, an animator accidentally ran a root command that rapidly deleted about 90 percent of the film's rendered files from the main servers. The studio's backup system had silently failed a month prior. It was only reversed because the supervising technical director had a relatively recent copy on her home computer while on maternity leave. But even after recovering the data, the directors realized the story still was not working, prompting the team to scrap the entire narrative and completely rebuild the movie in a nine month sprint before its premiere. Multiple animators, writers, even execs, have said early screenings were dead silent, with grown adults just staring at the screen like “no way they’re really doing this."
