👇You’re looking for the WRONG thing during tracking. I always tell you to find objects instead of people… But many trainers still mess it up by choosing the wrong objects. Like a glove… Or a wallet… And other things that are WAY too big. The whole point is to make your dog rely on its nose instead of its eyes. (Otherwise, you could do the tracking, right?) Instead, look for tiny objects like nails. Why is this such a game-changer? Because the dog can’t see tiny things from afar. It HAS to use its nose to locate the object and indicate it. If you immediately teach tracking with people, your dog will try to spot the person with its EYES. That makes the dog much more EXCITED and HECTIC. Less focus, more pressure, and far less precise tracking... And I know you want the opposite: Faster & more permanent tracking results… More precision… And better real-life missions. I made a free video showing you how to raise the best tracking dog in your area in the next few weeks… Comment “Tracking video” (of “Speur video” voor Nederlands) and I’ll send it immediately. #DogTrainingTips #WorkingDogTraining #PositiveDogTraining #ObedientDog #K9Training #DogTrainerLife #PuppyTrainingBasics #TrainDontComplain #DogTrainingVideo #FoundationTraining

My 3 BIGGEST tracking hacks… Coming from my 45 years of experience as a working dog trainer: #1: Start at an angle: If you always start straight ahead, you’re not teaching your dog to use its nose from the beginning to find the track. #2: Start on easy hard surfaces. Use stones with sand, moss or small vegetation in the gaps. These hold more scent and make the first steps in hard-surface tracking easier. #3: Don’t tell your dog where to go: If you do, your dog will become dependent on your help (which you can’t give in real-life situations, since you DON’T know where the track leads.) I explain all these (and MUCH more) in my free tracking video. It will show you how to go from 0 to having a reliable tracking dog in just a few WEEKS. (Takes most handlers multiple months, if they ever get there…) Just comment “Tracking video” (of “Speur video” voor Nederlands) and I’ll send it to you. #DogTrainingTips #WorkingDogTraining #PositiveDogTraining #ObedientDog #K9Training #DogTrainerLife #PuppyTrainingBasics #TrainDontComplain #DogTrainingVideo #FoundationTraining

Your dog isn’t bad at tracking… you’re just letting them move too fast. Most handlers rush the process, let the dog get sloppy, and then wonder why the track falls apart. Tracking isn’t about speed. It’s about precision, control, and commitment to the scent. For 33+ years, I’ve taken what works from pet dogs, police K9s, military working dogs, and sport competitors—and built a system that actually produces consistent results in the real world. If your dog is: • Blowing past turns • Lifting their head • Getting distracted halfway through You don’t need a new dog… you need a better system. 💥 This is exactly what I break down inside my Tracking Mastery course. You’ll learn how to: • Slow your dog down without killing drive • Build real focus on the track • Create clean, methodical tracking behavior that holds up under pressure No guesswork. No fluff. Just a system that works. One system. Real results. 👇 Comment “TRACK” and I’ll send you the link #k9servicesunlimited #justinrigneydogtraining #tracking #k9

After a long, hot day of running a variety of field problems, we decided to get one more in. We set up a scenario-based exercise where we rolled up on the subject’s vehicle and ran the problem like it would happen in the real world. We let it cook for over an hour so we could get extra reps for our area search teams and work on indication exercises. That decision paid off. The delay left multiple fresh trails moving in the opposite direction of the actual track and we had no idea which direction the trail went. Completely double blind. Exactly how it should be to test your capabilities and collect real world data points on problems and the dog. Takeaway from the video: Notice that my only spoken word is the search command. Nothing else. Just mouth closed and ears and eyes open while observing the dog’s body language. I often see handlers talk nonstop while the dog is utilizing every one of it’s senses to hunt and locate the target scent or odor. There’s a reason this old saying exists: 👉 Shut your mouth and run your dog. Trust the training. Trust the dog. Don’t be afraid to fail in training. Fail just means: -First -Attempt -In -Learning #ArdentK9Training #K9Training #WorkingK9 #DetectionK9 #AreaSearch #ScentWork #RunYourDog #DoubleBlind #K9Handler #RealWorldTraining #TrustTheDog #FieldProblems #VeteranOwned #SearchAndRescue #LawEnforcementK9 #verdesearchandrescue

If YOU want to get to this level of tracking… I’ll show you exactly how to start. I’ve just completed one of the hardest tracks I’ve ever attempted with Lucy. I don’t *ever* brag, but I dare say that… I have never seen this anywhere else in the world at this level. So listen up if you want tracking that looks like: Tracking on a hard surface in extreme conditions… Constantly making tough decisions (does the track go left or right?)... Ignoring an insane number of scents at public transport stations at 9 A.M. on a workday… (COMPLETELY independently, without any help, just like in real missions). If you want such fantastic results, you’ll need a new method. Something radically different than what you’re used to. The same old “lay food on the track” advice won’t work. Luckily… I just made a free tracking video that shows how I got here. You’ll learn precisely how to reward your dog… What it should look for at the end of the track (hint: NOT food and NOT people)... How to make sure your dog never fails in real-world missions… And how to LEAP past your competition in just 60 days or less. If you want it… Comment “Tracking video” (of ”Speur video” voor Nederlands) and I’ll send it immediately. #DogTrainingTips #WorkingDogTraining #PositiveDogTraining #ObedientDog #K9Training #DogTrainerLife #PuppyTrainingBasics #TrainDontComplain #DogTrainingVideo #FoundationTraining

Most people walk their dogs through a park. We train in them. This clip is real scent work in a live environment. People, dogs, wind, distractions everywhere. Exactly the sort of conditions that expose whether a dog truly understands the job or whether it has only ever worked in controlled training setups. At the Rutland Tracking Association we don’t train dogs for ribbons, certificates or tidy little search boxes. We train dogs to use their nose properly and we teach handlers how to read what their dog is telling them. Tracking. Trailing. Real scent work. The same principles used in operational dog work, adapted so everyday owners can unlock what their dog is actually capable of. Most dogs are bored. Most owners underestimate them. Give a dog a real job and watch what happens. If you’d like to learn how to work your dog like this, come and train with us. 📍 Rutland Tracking Association 🐕 All breeds welcome 🧠 Turn your dog’s nose into their greatest outlet Message me “SCENT DETECTION” if you’d like to get started.

👇Why we DON’T track with people. ^ This might be the #1 reason why our dogs are so good at finding criminals. If you always train with people at the end of the track, your dog will learn to rely on its eyes. It will be highly aroused, restless… and it’s just a recipe for disaster. But in real missions, you search for people, right? So… shouldn’t you train with people all the time? Well, no. If you want to be the best handler in your area… Mostly train with objects at the end, and only use people SOMETIMES. Objects are much harder to find… and that forces your dog to use its nose. The better your dog is at using its nose, the better it is at tracking. Simple. I made a free tracking guide with everything you need to go from 0 to having a very reliable tracking dog in just 60 days. It’s part of my signature training system… Which I’ve used for over 45 years to raise some of the best tracking dogs in the world. Just comment “Tracking video” (of “Speur video” voor Nederlands), and I’ll send it to you immediately.
