How cool is this? Trafficator or Semaphore signals on a 1950 VW Barndoor. Trafficators pop out of a vehicles body to indicate the drivers intention to turn. They are often located at the door pillar. They first one appeared in the 1900s, when they were actuated either mechanically or pneumatically. The shape is closely based upon semaphore signal arms used by the Royal Bavarian Railway beginning in 1890. The only difference is that they are halved in its length to fit flush with the vehicles body. Semaphores were common on cars until the introduction of indicators. Perfectly simulates the car... It even doesn’t use turn signals. BMW took durability testing of the E39 M5 very seriously, especially since it was the first M5 to use a V8 (the 4.9-liter S62). To ensure it could handle the brutal demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, engineers ran a unique stress-test cycle: they programmed test benches to replicate the full throttle, braking, and gear-shift patterns of a complete lap around the Nordschleife, then repeated it over and over again for hundreds of simulated laps. This meant the drivetrain, cooling system, suspension, and even the Getrag 6-speed gearbox were exposed to the same punishment they would see on track—only concentrated into non-stop endurance torture. The idea was to make sure the car’s components didn’t just survive one or two fast laps, but could repeatedly take the kind of abuse an owner might throw at it during track days. The E39 M5 came out of this testing with its reputation for reliability at high speeds firmly intact, helping solidify its legendary status as one of the most balanced and durable super sedans of its era.
