The design of train wheels is genius. If we have a train track with a slight curve, and we try to roll some basic wheels across it, we’ll simply derail. Okay, you might say, it’s an easy fix. You could just add a flange so it doesn’t derail. And while the flange does keep it from derailing, it can’t really navigate a turn. So how exactly can we solve the issue of a train negotiating a turn?

@howtechnologyworks This is how train couplers work! Knuckle Design: The knuckle coupler consists of two metal arms, or knuckles, that interlock when two couplers come together. Each knuckle has a vertical pivot pin at its base and a horizontal locking pin near its tip. Coupler Head: The front end of each railcar has a coupler head, which houses the knuckle mechanism. The coupler head is mounted on a vertical pivot pin, allowing it to swing horizontally and vertically. Locking Mechanism: When two railcars come together, the coupler heads are aligned, and the knuckles of each coupler engage with each other. The horizontal locking pins on the knuckles move into position, locking the knuckles together. #viral #trains #traincoupler

Train drivers often face limited visibility due to locomotive design. Unlike cars, trains follow a fixed path and depend on seeing far ahead to anticipate track conditions. Weather factors like fog, rain, snow, and sun glare can severely impair visibility of signals, obstacles, or pedestrians. At high speeds, minimal reaction time makes poor visibility a serious safety risk. Conditions worsen at night or in extreme weather.
