People often ask me, how hard is it to train a cat? But the better question is… how does your cat actually learn? Not all tricks are equal. Some behaviours take minutes, others take days, weeks or even months. And the difference isn’t just the trick, it’s your cat’s motivation, confidence, emotional state, and learning style. What’s often misunderstood is that training isn’t really about performance. Behaviour research, including John Bradshaw’s work, shows that cats thrive when they can think, solve, and make choices, not just follow commands. So here’s something worth asking ourselves…Do we still believe training is about forcing and performance? Because in reality, there’s no true way to make a cat do something they don’t want to do, and we all know that. Real training only happens when a cat feels safe, willing, and engaged enough to participate. For intelligent breeds like Bengals, training becomes a way to offer mental challenge, emotional regulation, and a sense of control in their environment. When I rate Cora’s tricks by difficulty and training time, I’m not measuring obedience. I’m watching her thinking, problem-solving, and emotional readiness. Because true training isn’t about control. It’s about building a language you both understand. And once that language exists…you’re not just teaching tricks anymore. You’re building trust, confidence, and connection. That’s the real goal. 🤍 If this helped you see cat training differently, save this for your next training session and share it with someone who thinks cats can’t be trained. Oscar used to love scratching the couch… until I learned a few simple changes that made him choose the right spot instead. Cats like to take control, they do things when it makes sense to them, and when they choose, they learn faster and feel confident. 🧠✨ Scratching where it feels good or smells familiar is natural. Redirecting their behavior works better than punishing because it gives them a better choice they actually want. I even found a scratching post that feels just like the couch, and now he’s happy… and so am I. ❤️ ✨ Have a cat who loves your furniture too? What does your fur baby randomly refuse to master? “Down” is one of the first tricks most people teach. And it’s somehow the one we re-train the most. He’s earned an Expert trick title… but still struggles with this novice cue. Training isn’t always about difficulty. Sometimes it’s about temperament. Grizzly tends to resist “stillness”… he also hates “back-up”. The “easy” tricks aren’t always easy. 💾 Save before you assume they’re being stubborn ➡️ Follow for honest training wins (and humbling moments) 💬 Want in on Trick Tuesday? LOVE trend, Trick Tuesday edition. Same cue. Different setups. This is what it looks like when you train the concept, not the prop. Hoop, arm, even a broom or leg… the ask (‘Over’) stays the same. Clear cues mean less guessing, smoother reps, and skills that transfer when something changes. 💾 Save this for your cat training inspo ➡️ Follow for cat training that actually works 💬 Want in on Trick Tuesday? Trick training is a daily bonding experience for us, and I'm starting to understand why she nibbles my bum when we haven't had enough sessions. This week, we've nailed the high five and are working on spin - and it's only been four weeks since she joined the family 🤍. I've also discovered she's a lefty! Is your cat left or right pawed? #cattraining #bengalkitten #catsofinstagram #kittensofinstagram #cattricks

I keep getting messages and comments asking for tips so here is a formula that worked for me. I’m just learning as I go so I’ll continue to experiment! It might differ from cat to cat as well. For training, the repetition is important. I don’t do training every single day but a few times a week for 10-15min each, and I build in some tricks here and there. For example, for wet food time, I tap the floor and call her, and she has to do paw before she gets her food. It felt nearly impossible to teach her tricks at first but once you get the first one locked in, you’ll start believing it’s possible 😂 She’s barely past 4 months right now, so I think she’s progressing well. #kitten #cat #cattraining #cattricks #catparent

Easy mental enrichment! 😽 Just paper towel or toilet paper rolls, index cards or anything strong enough to hold the treats and tape! You can put the treats before you go to bed or before going out so they have something to do while you’re sleeping or out! 🐾 💫 😼#catmom #indoorcat #bengalcat #catlover #smartcat

So many people asked me how I trained Cora to fetch… and the truth is I never trained her. 🐾 She actually started doing this when she was just a tiny kitten…and that showed me something important about cats. What looks like “training” is actually communication and relationship. Cora drops her fish toy, taps my hand, and waits…because she has learned that I will listen and respond. This is what highly intelligent, high-energy cats often do. They don’t just play for entertainment, they use play to create a two-way interaction with their human. When we stop labeling behaviours as “demanding” or “naughty”and start asking, what need is my cat expressing? everything changes. That’s the heart of The Bengal Guide: ✨ Understanding instead of judging ✨ Connection instead of correction ✨ Responding to the need behind the behaviour Because sometimes fetch isn’t about the toy… it’s about feeling seen. ❤️ Does your cat have a special way of asking you to play? Tell me in the comments, I’d love to hear their language. 🐾 💡 If this resonates, save it for later and share it with a fellow cat parent who needs to see this! . . . #bengalcat #smartcat #fetch #thebengalguide #cats_of_instagram

Cats aren’t low maintenance. They’re just really good at coping. And that shouldn’t be the bar. #CatCare #CatWellbeing #ResponsiblePetOwnership #CatEducation #CatParentLife

How to train your cat not to bite 🐾 I start with very subtle growls during play if they go for my hands instead of the toy. Always use a toy when playing so they learn it’s okay to bite the toy, not you. If the biting gets more aggressive, I increase the growl and firmly say no. The moment they stop, I pet them to reinforce the good behavior. If they keep biting, I repeat the growl and no until they stop, then reward them with affection. Consistency is key, and they learn surprisingly fast when the boundaries are clear. 😻🥰
