I’ve had thousands of questions about this over the years. Growing successfully under large gum trees isn’t about luck. It’s about understanding soil, plant selection and water management. I’m a horticulturist and garden designer creating a climate compatible garden here on my farm in country South Australia. I share practical, thoughtful ways to grow resilient gardens in dry Australian conditions. If you love learning how to work with your environment rather than against it, you’re in the right place. Follow along for practical garden design, soil wisdom and water-wise planting ideas. 🌱Aleisha

Most new gardens in Perth don’t fail because of the plants. They fail because they’re built for photos… not for Western Australia. Perth has some of the toughest gardening conditions in the country. We have: • Sandy, nutrient-poor soil • Long, dry summers • Intense UV • Water restrictions • Coastal winds in many suburbs • Sudden heatwaves over 40°C A garden that looks amazing on install day can struggle within 12–18 months if it isn’t designed properly for these conditions. Here’s what usually goes wrong: Plants are chosen for appearance, not climate. Many popular plants sold in nurseries simply aren’t suited to Perth’s dry summers and sandy soils. They look great at first, then slowly decline. The soil is never properly improved. Perth sand drains fast and holds very little nutrition. Without proper soil conditioning, wetting agents, compost and clay incorporation, roots never establish deeply. Irrigation is installed poorly or inefficiently. Wrong sprinkler choice. Poor pressure regulation. No zoning for sun exposure. Overwatering in winter. Underwatering in summer. Plants either rot or dry out. Gardens are planted too densely. They look full and lush on day one, but within a year plants compete for water, airflow reduces, and disease increases. There’s no long-term maintenance plan. Even the best-designed garden needs pruning, seasonal feeding, irrigation adjustments and monitoring. Without it, small problems become expensive ones. In Perth, a garden must be built differently. It needs: ✔ Climate-appropriate plant selection ✔ Soil preparation specific to WA sand ✔ Efficient irrigation designed for water restrictions ✔ Correct spacing for mature growth ✔ A maintenance strategy from day one When those things are done properly, a garden doesn’t just look good at handover. It matures. It fills out naturally. It becomes more valuable over time. That’s the difference between installing a garden… …and building one that lasts in Western Australia.

Do you have floppy trees in your garden? You might be over-watering. Between rainfall and irrigation, these young Eucs were stacking on soft, sappy growth and struggling to keep themselves straight! Some careful thinning of branches saw them (up)right again, with some gentle guidance via stake & hessian needed for a few. 🌳 #gardening #treecare #pruningtips #nativeaustralianplants #newgarden

Let’s see how it goes then huh… #landscaping #sydneylandscaping #gardening #sydney #landscapinglife

Most trees fail because they’re not watered properly after planting. Today we installed irrigation rings around each tree using in-line drip pipe. It slowly releases water directly into the root zone where the tree actually needs it, rather than flooding the surface and hoping for the best. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference to how quickly trees establish and start filling out. If you’re planting trees in your garden, this is something you should definitely be considering.

It all boils down to two things: First - your soil. If you’re trying to grow non-natives, they need a lot more moisture and nutrients than our soil naturally provides. So many Perth gardeners struggle because we start off on the back foot, with barren soil that repels water. Fix your soil, get it to hold onto moisture and fill it with nutrients and you will find gardening SO much easier! (And if you’d like help with that side of things, comment SOIL to grab a copy of my soil improvement guide designed specifically for Perth gardeners with sandy soil. In it, I explain exactly what I’ve done to turn my beach sand soil into moisture-retentive, rich, earthworm-filled garden beds) Second - your plants. Our gardens are only ever as good as the plants we grow. Once you’ve fixed your soil you’ll be able to grow a bigger range of plants, and the plants you grow will grow bigger and more healthy. BUT, we do not live in a mild English climate, or in the rich soil on the side of an Italian volcano. We have to accept our environmental conditions and pick plants that are well suited to those conditions. Picking the right plants makes gardening so much easier! Obviously local native plants are a great pick for our environment as they evolved to live here. But if you’d want to grow a range of natives AND non-natives, look for plants that are suited to a temperate/arid climate. This means plants from the Mediterranean, from California, South Africa and other regions with hot, dry summers. Here are a handful of my favourites (for a bigger list of my favourite flowering plants that thrive in Perth, comment BLOOM and checkout my giant gardening book that lists over 100 of the plants I grow in my own garden). Favourites of mine that are super tough: passionfruit marigolds, Echium, ribbon bush, wormwood, salvias, miscanthus feather grass, Flanders poppies, and spring bulbs like daffodils (it’s time to start ordering these for autumn planting btw!). For a much more comprehensive plant list, plus design tips and many many photos of my own plant combinations, comment BLOOM and I’ll send you the link to grab the book x
