If you’ve ever seen a random T. rex skeleton in a museum, there’s a decent chance they are a cast. While many museums DO exhibit the genuine fossils within a mount, it’s often preferable to display scientific copies of the bones instead. They’re lighter and easier to mount, keep the original fossils safe/available for study, and can be produced for exhibition in multiple museums. So why do a lot of museums have casts of the SAME Tyrannosaurus individual? Stan the T. rex is the (fifth) most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known, with 199/350 (70%) of its bones present. Importantly, the skull is regarded as one of the best of the species ever discovered: nearly complete and with little taphonomic deformation. This means that the bones (and therefore casts) of the animal look particularly well on display. Perhaps most importantly, Stan was discovered by @everythingprehistoricbhigr, a private museum and excavation operation. As part of their operations, they offer high-resolution casts of some of the dinosaurs they’ve discovered, with Stan a particularly popular option. For decades, scientists weren’t sure whether a small dinosaur skull found in the 1940s belonged to a young Tyrannosaurus rex (the famous big meat-eating dino) or to a completely different species of smaller tyrannosaur. In a recent collaboration between @Princeton University (led by Christopher Griffin) and the @gocmnh (led by Caitlin Colleary), paleontologists looked at tiny bones from the throat area of that skull. These bones can show “growth rings,” kind of like tree rings, which help tell if the animal was young or fully grown when it died. The growth rings showed that this little dinosaur was full-grown, even though it was much smaller than a T-rex. That means it wasn’t just a baby T-rex. It was its own species. Scientists call this species Nanotyrannus lancensis - a smaller tyrannosaur that lived at the same time and in the same places as big T-rex.
