Prehistoric Planet Ice Age: Arctotherium vs Protocyon. Part 1. Arctotherium was an extinct genus of giant short-faced bears that lived in Central and South America during the Pleistocene epoch, known for being the largest bears ever, with the biggest species, A. angustidens, weighing up to 3,800 pounds or more. These powerful, robust animals were apex predators, hunting large prey like ground sloths and tapirs, though they were also omnivores, eating plants, fish, and other foods. They went extinct around 10,000 years ago, likely due to climate change and competition with humans, leaving the spectacled bear as their closest living relative. Protocyon was a genus of large, extinct, hypercarnivorous canids that lived in South America during the Pleistocene epoch, similar to modern African wild dogs or dholes, and hunted in packs. Key species include P. troglodytes, known for its wide distribution and hypercarnivorous diet, and P. orcesi, found in Ecuador. Fossils have been found across South America, with some evidence suggesting it may have also reached southern North America. Trilobit pertama kali muncul dalam catatan fosil pada masa Atdabania awal periode kambrium (521 juta tahun lalu), dan mulai mengalami kemunduran hingga punah pada masa Devon, saat semua ordo trilobit kecuali Proetida mengalami kepunahan. Trilobit akhirnya musnah saat peristiwa kepunahan Perm-Trias pada akhir masa Perm sekitar 250 juta tahun yang lalu. Trilobit termasuk binatang yang paling sukses di antara binatang-binatang yang pertamakali muncul, mampu bertahan dari kepunahan selama lebih dari 270 juta tahun. Pada saat trilobit pertamakali muncul dalam catatan fosil, Mereka sudah sangat beranekaragam dan tersebar diberbagi wilayah geografis. Karena sangat variatif dan termasuk eksoskleton yang mudah memfosil, trilobit meninggalkan banyak fosil. Sekitar 17.000 fosil diketahui pernah hidup pada zaman paleozoikum.
