Tryon Palace is a beloved historic site today, but before the American Revolution, it was widely disliked. The royal governor used money meant for public schools to build it, then raised taxes to replace the funds. Vandals and a fire in 1798 destroyed much of the palace, but it was rebuilt in 1959 and now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. ✨ Tryon Palace ✨ Did you know North Carolina’s first capital was in New Bern? It was the capital for 45 years during the colonial era, and then moved west to Raleigh in 1792. Tryon Palace was the Governor’s Palace! @tryonpalace We love a good historical adventure and this was great for all ages. 📍 We parked and bought our tickets at 529 S. Front Street (the North Carolina History Center). ⏰ Hours: Honestly, they are a little bit all over the place in the Winter. Check their website before you go! 💰 One Day Pass (includes the NC history center, Tryon Gardens, Palace Tour & Dixon House Tour) Adults: $20 Youth 6-14: $10 Kids under 5: free 🇺🇸 Military Discount: 10% off— FREE on Memorial Day & Veteran’s Day for member & dependents. ‼️There are two other ticket options: Galleries & Gardens or Gardens Pass. I definitely think the One Day Pass is worth it. Tryon Palace ✨ We’ve lived in NC for a little over 2 years and I’m just finally visiting this beautiful place! I enjoy that there is so much history behind where we live. New Bern was the first permanent capitol of North Carolina. And this was the governor’s palace. The original building burned down in 1798 but they rebuilt and got as close as they could to the ordinal building in the 1950’s. Step into the pages of history… at Tryon Palace, where America’s past meets architectural splendor. Discover North Carolina’s first capitol, built between 1767 and 1770. Envisioned by Governor William Tryon and designed by English architect John Hawks, this Georgian-style palace was among the American colonies’ finest buildings. Home to Governors Tryon and Josiah Martin, it witnessed pivotal moments in history, including a grand assembly for President George Washington in 1791. However, a tragic fire in 1798 led to its collapse, leaving only the Stable Office standing. Fast forward to the 1930s: a passionate restoration movement began, sparked by Mrs. James Edwin Latham’s dedication and supported by the Tryon Palace Commission. Despite Mrs. Latham’s death in 1951, her daughter continued the mission, leading to an archaeological revival of the original foundation and the palace’s eventual reopening to the public. In the city of Troyes, you can find countless examples of half-timbered houses that were constructed after the great fire of 1524 devastated the city, necessitating a rapid reconstruction primarily in wood. These houses followed medieval traditions while incorporating some Renaissance elements of the era. The old buildings began to be demolished after World War II until the 1950s and 60s when they were protected and restored to their original coloration. Today I walked along the River Thames to where Richmond Palace once stood. All that survives today is the gatehouse. I know I’m not alone in loving to walk around the area imagining what it would have been like. A Royal Palace had existed on that site since the 12th century. It is also where the first Tudor Monarch - Henry VII - and the last - Elizabeth I - both passed away. Other events that took place here include; * Queen Anne of Bohemia (wife of Richard II) died of the plague in 1394 and Richard tore the palace down afterwards. * Mary Tudor, Queen of France (sister of Henry VIII & grandmother of Lady Jane Grey) was born here in 1496. * In 1497, a great fire broke out in King Henry VII’s apartments destroying a large section of the palace. Contemporary witnesses describe the King, Queen Elizabeth of York and three of their children Henry (future Henry VIII) and Princesses Margaret & Mary quite literally running for their lives with the young children carried out in the arms of their governesses. * Margaret Tudor (sister of Henry VIII & grandmother of Mary, Queen of Scots) set off to marry the King of Scotland from here in 1503 when she was 13. * Henry VII died here in 1509. * Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon’s son Henry, Duke of Cornwall, was born here in 1511. He sadly died less than two months later. * In 1527, Cardinal Wolsey had a meeting with Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and he came to realise that Anne held more influence than he had realised. * A favourite residence of Anne Boleyn’s daughter Elizabeth I who described it as her “winter box”. Château de Tilloloy oldukça etkileyici bir Fransız şatosu ve bulunduğu bölgenin tarihini yansıtan önemli yapılardan biri. Kısaca anlatayım: Bu şato, 17. yüzyılda inşa edilmiş ve klasik Fransız mimarisinin zarif örneklerinden biri sayılıyor. Zamanında aristokrat bir aileye ait olan yapı, geniş bahçeleri ve simetrik mimarisiyle dikkat çekiyor. Tarihi yönü en ilginç kısmı: Şato özellikle I. Dünya Savaşı sırasında büyük zarar görmüş. Somme bölgesi savaşın en yoğun geçtiği yerlerden biri olduğu için şato da cephe hattına yakın kalmış. Ancak savaş sonrası restore edilerek bugünkü haline kavuşmuş. Mimari özellikleri: * Kırmızı tuğla ve taşın birlikte kullanıldığı klasik Fransız tarzı * Simetrik cephe düzeni * Geniş bir park ve bahçeler * Daha çok yaşanmış ve sıcak bir şato hissi (Versailles gibi ihtişamlı değil, daha samimi) Bugün: Şato hala özel mülk olarak kullanılıyor (Fransız aristokrat aileye bağlı özel mülk) Aile içinde nesilden nesile geçen bir mülk olarak korunuyor. Zaman zaman etkinliklere (düğün, özel davetler gibi) ev sahipliği yapabiliyor. Eğer Somme bölgesini gezerken yolunuz düşerse, dışarıdan bile görmesi keyifli bir yapı özellikle doğa ile birleşimi çok güzel. Özel mülk olduğu için, etkinlikler dışında içeriye giriş maalesef mümkün değil. Bir düşünsenize, içinde size ait devasa bir ormanı olan bir şatonuz var. Sanırım şu anki mülk sahibi Paris’te yaşıyor. d’Andigné ailesine (Famille d’Andigné) ait.
