HOW TO STORE DAHLIA TUBERS ! Well this is one way to store them 😉 The more you learn about dahlia tuber storage, you will find out there are NUMEROUS ways to store them, and it is just a matter of trial and error to see which way works best for you and your climate. 1) I divide our dahlia tubers in the Fall. I let them sit for a day to dry / have their ends cure (as you may have seen in my other reels, I cut the ends off of each tuber to check for rot). 2) I store our tubers in vermiculite as it works great for our climate and humidity levels. 3) I store them in plastic containers which I re-use each season. I have poked some holes along the top to allow a bit of moisture to escape. 4) When I move the bins to their storage area in our crawlspace I leave the lids off for a day to allow them to acclimatize to the temperature before sealing the lids. 5) I check on the tubers frequently throughout storage to check for tuber bins with too much moisture (or sometimes ones that may need to be misted if they are shriveling) and remove any obvious rotten tubers. 6) I make sure the area they are being stored in stays consistently between 5-10 degrees Celsius (40-50F) and to monitor their humidity levels. SO much success with dahlia storage really depends on learning what works best for your climate. Don’t be afraid to try!! You will definitely lose some tubers in the process, but each year you’ll fine tune your process even more. Last December, yes December, after I finished digging and had wrapped up the field work I had a crazy notion to run a few tuber storage experiments. I didn't want to potentially ruin any good tubers, so I walked out to the seedling field and dug several large clumps that I didn't want to keep. The tags were long gone and the plants identify was a mystery. I divided those clumps, labeling them 1, 2, and 3, separated them out into several treatment groups which included a control group that sat out in the open air on my garage counter all winter. I expected the control group to shrivel up and become dessicated by spring. Well, jokes on me because I randomly selected the world's best storing dahlia tubers. 😂 Since the control group performed so well I decided to plant a tuber to see who they were. 2 have bloomed and I shared their images at the end of the reel. Well done my little second chance beauties. They are certainly providing a feast for the local pollinators! #coseytowndahlias

Tuber storage is the hardest part of this operation. Finding what works best for your climate can be a big challenge. I tried three methods this year. I divided many tubers last fall and placed them in crates covered with vermiculite. Considering our move in December put them in less than optimal conditions, we came out about 50/50. We were left with the food, the bad, and the ugly for sure. I also tried the “Saran wrap method”...we won’t even look at those. Gross! The third and most successful method was leaving the clip exactly as it came out of the ground. We still stored them in our storage tent, but left the dirt in them uncovered. These look wonderful and so far, the only rot I’ve sound is in the stem. I think the dirt insulates as well as keeps the moisture in the tuber. The problem with this method is space. Clumps take up a lot of room. This clump proved worth it though as it produced 29 tubers which will each grow its own beautiful plant.

👏🏻 Saran-Wrap Method for tuber storage 👏🏻 Last year I tested this method vs storing in a bin with vermiculite. And the plastic wrap method outperformed the vermiculite by far. 95% of my tubers made it vs only half made it with the vermiculite, which was also higher maintenance. I wrap them in bundles of 3-5 depending on tuber size and each tuber is individually wrapped in the bundle as well. Make sure you label properly! The great advantages of this method: problems are isolated and don’t spread, like mold or other rotting issues. Also, you can see the tubers through the wrap and easily see if there are any issues going on. Downsides: this isn’t really suitable for large numbers of tubers and you produce waste with it. Also, please make your own experience and test some storing methods which work for your area and conditions. 🙌🏻 What is your favorite tuber storing method?
