Nicole Ibrahim, a Ph.D. student at the UMCES Appalachian Laboratory, spent months at the Shakpak Ornithological Station researching the migratory patterns of birds throughout Central Asia. Through stable hydrogen isotope analysis, Ibrahim can determine where feathers were grown prior to migration. This technique enables researchers to predict the origin of these birds without the need for GPS sensor technology, generating useful data for conservation efforts. The health of the Chesapeake Bay just received its best grade since 2002 on the annual UMCES Chesapeake Bay Report Card, detailing the health of the Bay and its watershed in 2023. Overall, the Chesapeake Bay received a C+, which may not seem high. But it marks a 4% increase from the previous year’s assessment and is part of a significantly improving trend in the health of the Chesapeake from 1986–2023. The report card looks at 11 different indicators to determine the health of the Bay. They include dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, chlorophyll a, water clarity, underwater grasses, benthic communities, blue crabs and fish communities. The indicator with the highest score was dissolved oxygen, as the Chesapeake Bay had its smallest dead zone on record last year. This was followed by significant reductions in phosphorus pollution, with the lower Bay receiving a perfect score. In addition to assessing the Bay proper, the report card also looks at the overall health for the watershed. The Chesapeake Bay watershed, which spans 64,000 square miles of land, was graded a C, remaining the same as the previous year. The overall watershed grade is determined by the same 11 indicators for the Bay, but also includes societal and economic indicators, such as median income and job growth. “The upper Chesapeake Bay, which receives the Susquehanna River, has the second highest score in Bay health, and it continues to improve,” said Bill Dennison, vice-president for science application at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES)’s Integration and Application Network. “This improvement is a testament to efforts to reduce nutrients in the Susquehanna River watershed, underscoring the hard work in Pennsylvania on nutrient reduction and riparian buffers.” Above, on Maryland’s Severn River, a school of menhaden and silversides swim through beds of sago pondweed and other species of submerged aquatic vegetation that are the foundation of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.
