Interestingly, these guys can dive more than 20 m underwater and have blunt snouts that help them feed on algae. They also have flattened tails that help them swim efficiently and fast. Real-life Godzilla… but it feeds on algae, not humans 🦎 The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is the only lizard on Earth that forages at sea. Found exclusively in the Galápagos, it diverged from land iguanas millions of years ago and evolved highly specialized adaptations: • Laterally flattened tail for propulsion through water • Strong limbs and long claws to grip slippery volcanic rock in heavy surge • Dark coloration to absorb heat quickly after cold dives • Nasal salt glands that actively excrete excess salt (visible as “sneezing”) They primarily graze on marine algae, with larger males capable of diving over 10 meters, while smaller individuals feed in the intertidal zone. Their metabolism is tightly linked to ocean conditions—during events like El Niño, when algae becomes scarce, they can reduce their body length to lower energy demands. Even their behavior is optimized: they bask in large groups to rewarm quickly after dives, maintaining the body temperature needed for digestion and movement.
