Protecting our rainforests is crucial to preserving our planet’s #biodiversity and limiting #climate change, as healthy ecosystems store enormous amounts of greenhouse gases. However, forests the size of a football pitch are cut down every four seconds worldwide. And every eleven minutes an animal or plant species disappears forever. More than 42% of #Ecuador is covered by forest, making it one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. Local and indigenous communities, such as those I had the pleasure of visiting in the Mindo Nambillo Cloudforest Reserve, are a great example of how human life and economic activity can be in harmony with nature. These communities are the custodians of our world’s natural heritage, but they can’t do it alone. They need support in protecting the forests, and at the same time, we must ensure that the local population has opportunities to improve their living conditions. That means that local cocoa or coffee farmers must get a #fair price on the world market for their sustainably produced products and more local value addition is needed. New jobs must be created that allow economic growth in harmony with nature, also in areas like sustainable forestry and forest management or #ecotourism – this is what #UNIDO is working on together with the Global Environment Facility #GEF @gef_global_environment #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #sustainableforestry #cocoa #fairtrade #sustainabledevelopment #mindonambillo #rainforest

Watch as I deliver my statement at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States #SIDS4. #SIDS are most affected by the impacts of climate change, yet there is not enough support from the industrialized countries. Only 1.5% of global Official Development Assistance (ODA) is invested in the SIDS. This is unacceptable! We have the technology and knowledge to solve the challenges SIDS are facing, to help them adapt and prosper. The islands have great potential, there are lots of opportunities, especially in sectors such as the blue economy and renewable energies. But a multibillion dollar investment offensive is needed, one that includes the private sector. I thank our partners, @gef_global_environment , @greenclimatefund, and great donor countries for the support to foster resilient economic growth in SIDS.
