Astronomers Till Sawala and his team at the University of Helsinki ran 100,000 simulations using the latest Hubble and ESA Gaia data factoring in 22 different variables. What they found shook the astronomy world 🌀 They found only a 2% probability that the galaxies will collide in the next five billion years, contrary to the previous belief that collision was a certainty within that timeframe 💀 The Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, pulls us perpendicular to Andromeda's path, significantly reducing the chance of merger. A tiny galaxy quietly saving ours without anyone asking it to 🔭 But here is what makes it truly beautiful. If a collision does occur it would trigger a fierce period of star birth followed by intense radiation from exploding young stars and a newly active supermassive black hole. A catastrophe that would simultaneously birth thousands of new suns 💫 A smashup would toss our Sun into a completely new orbit.
