Flying as a relief pilot during a 16-hour duty day from San Francisco to Manila, Philippines. 🇵🇭 On flights over 12 hours, we carry two additional pilots and work in shifts so that we always have at least two well rested pilots in the flight deck. Unlike most other countries, airlines in the United States do not use secondary pilot ranks such as second officer, relief pilot, or cruise pilot. All pilots are qualified on their aircraft as either Captains or First Officers and can operate flights interchangeably as either the operating pilot or a relief pilot. On a 4-person crew, there is usually one captain and three first officers. The captain and one first officer are the “flying crew”, while the other two pilots are the “relief crew”. The flying crew operates both the takeoff and landing, with the relief pilots assisting and observing from the flight deck jumpseats. Once a safe departure is assured, the relief crew leaves the flight deck and spends the first half of the flight on break in the crew rest area. At the halfway point there is a crew change, and the relief crew returns to the flight deck to relieve the operating crew. The relief crew operates the flight until just before top of descent, when the operating crew returns to the flight deck from their rest break. As with everything in this industry, these positions are decided and chosen based on seniority. While the operating positions tend to be more desirable, there are many trips where the relief pilot position goes senior. With many flights departing SFO to Asia, Australia, and New Zealand late at night, the relief pilots get the benefit of taking their first rest break during their normal circadian low (body clock time).
