My best texturing tips: 1. UVs matter more than you think Good textures start before texturing. Clean UVs, good texel density, smart seams, correct orientation = better results instantly. Bad UVs = you’re fighting your asset. 2. Get a CLEAN bake If your bake is messy, everything suffers. Generators, masks, edge wear… all depend on this. 3. Block materials early Set up folders + masks for each material (metal, plastic, paint, etc). This gives structure so you can refine instead of guess. 4. Use real reference Most bad textures fail because materials don’t feel real. Be specific about what things are made of and match it first. 5. Respect PBR values – Metal is usually 0 or 1 – Avoid pure black/white – Keep roughness believable This ensures your asset works everywhere. 6. Reinforce shape with texture Edge wear, grime, contrast… use them to improve readability at a glance. 7. Choose where detail lives Don’t make everything noisy. Either detailed roughness + simple color, or detailed color + simpler roughness. 8. Spend more time on roughness This is where realism comes from. Lighting response = everything. 9. Don’t rely on generators They’re powerful but can feel sterile. Hand work is what adds life. 10. Paint. A lot. Add, remove, refine. This is where it stops looking “correct” and starts looking real.
