In his view, this foundation of core values and identity would help Singaporeans engage with the world without losing themselves, balancing openness with a solid, locally based moral framework. His perspectives seem prescient today as young people increasingly adopt values from foreign cultures they encounter through online platforms and social media. Without a strong foundational grounding and understanding, there is a risk of accepting foreign ideas uncritically, which could ultimately lead to cultural dislocation and a decline in the shared norms that support social cohesion in Singapore.
