Van Build Part 4 Insulation For this part of the build I used @dodomatuk 6mm thermo liner and wool. Loved both these products the thermo liner was easy to cut and was really sticky too. I measured up the panels and made sketches then could cut out templates. Then used bits of paper for the awkward corners. Aiming to cover all the single skin surfaces was the goal. With the wool I covered the panels that would be behind walls and left where I was going to have windows and cut ins for my bed. I filled the channels but having now done my framing I wish I had left that because it chews up drill bits and screws. Insulating a van (after sound insulation panels put in) 1. For the roof I used hard board insulation, using sticky back pins to hold them up while @tec7adhesive cures 2. Closed cell foam @dodomatuk in the large panels, sheep’s wool over the top and put into the hard to reach places 3. Next video will show the floor method using hard board insulation too. These ways are all with moisture/water ingress in mind as in my opinion there is no way to prevent it so you need to use methods that still work in the wet. Vanlife build day 3: Subfloor This is an easy project to start on and get used to your tools. Put simply your steps are Create a template of your wheel wells and walls with cardboard - trace stencil onto insulation board (leave a little room for error and trim down) - Fill in the rest of the space with insulation board - Use the insulation to trace out cuts onto exterior rated plywood and then cut with your jigsaw (again leave some room for error and trim to fit) - Once both wheel wells are cut out, mark where your centre boards meet on both sides and use a straight edge to make a line across. (Also make sure this line isn’t line up with the line in your insulation or else the insulation won’t hold up your floor) - Use a cutting guide to make a straight cut and install your plywood to ensure a good fit -fill in the front side of your vans floor with an additional sheet of plywood and cut / trim to fit some of the small deviations in the walls I also ended up bolting in all down into the factory tie down strap mounting points to keep the floor secure. Eventually I will also add some adhesive to stop squeaks. Van Insulation ✅ Here’s how I insulated my van (in the simpliest form😅). Trust me, it was not as straightforward as it may look... To the female van builders: Give us a holler if you’ve found a way to remove expanding foam from your hair WITHOUT cutting it out 🥴... That also includes TrimFix, Sikaflex and paint 😂. For those looking for the specifics: I’ve used a variety of thicknesses including 25mm, 40mm, 50mm and 70mm of P.I.R board with recycled bottle wool in any awkward gaps. The board is held in place with spray adhesive and expanding foam. I didn’t have too many issues with the ceiling because the board was wedged neatly between plywood (batons).
