Students don’t struggle with distributing… They struggle with the sign. With -2(x − 5), many students get: -2x − 10 ❌ They forget to keep the sign with the term: (-2)(-5) = +10 ✅ Using an area model helps students see that the negative travels with each term — and it cuts down on sign mistakes.
