The news of V-E Day was welcomed by the men of the “Bloody Hundredth.” In a letter dated 8 May 1945, Capt. Frank Seibert wrote “the day’s celebrations involved drinking, talking, radio programs, etc…We knew yesterday but naturally awaited the confirmation. I heard President Truman and Churchill’s radio addresses. Tonight at 9pm we will join you in listening to the King.” The war in Europe was over, and then men from the Hundredth would begin to depart Thorpe Abbotts during the weeks and months that followed.
