Mesh is almost always made from synthetic materials, most common in clothing is a jersey mesh. While there is cotton mesh, it’s typically much more robust - think almost more like a netting used in tote bags etc. I went to quite a bit of effort to try and source some and came up short. Of course synthetics are stronger and cheaper to produce - which is likely is the reason cotton mesh is so unheard of, or at least very rare. I have a lot of other ideas for developing fabric because I find the process so fascinating, but because of the cost to do so, this will have to wait until later in my design journey when I can afford to do so. Sometimes things we spend so much time and effort on are not able to be realized as we had hoped… but most often there’s an opportunity to step back, reassess and pivot in a new direction. This is a prime example for me! I have been collecting these shirts by The Mountain because I love the nature focused artwork that’s licensed by many different artists. Since they are vintage, a few of them came with holes and I noticed I could always feel the breeze through them. That was a lightbulb moment and I decided to try and mimic mesh through the realization that jersey knit cotton (t shirt fabric) doesn’t fray, it rolls. Everyone assumes these shirts will fall apart in the wash, but they remain in near perfect form. Snagging is a cause for concern… but stay out of the bramble bushes or a construction site and there’s likely nothing to worry about!
