Is ChatGPT outperforming analysts in Venture Capital? The venture capital market has long relied on expert forecasts from financial analysts. But could artificial intelligence surpass human capabilities? A recent study reveals that ChatGPT might be a game-changer in this domain. How did it work? Researchers fed ChatGPT thousands of financial reports from over 15,000 companies spanning 1968 to 2021. Using the “chain-of-thought prompting” method, ChatGPT was tasked with answering key questions such as: ▫️Will the company’s earnings increase or decrease next year? ▫️What will be the magnitude of the change – small, medium, or large? ▫️How confident is the model in its predictions? ChatGPT also identified significant changes in financial statements, calculated key financial ratios, and provided explanations for each prediction in the form of economic analysis. Impressive accuracy The study’s findings were groundbreaking. ChatGPT achieved an accuracy rate of 60.4% in its predictions. By comparison, professional analysts managed 52.7% accuracy in their forecasts made one month after the release of financial statements. Even more impressively, ChatGPT outperformed analysts who made predictions six months later, despite having less up-to-date information. This underscores how challenging it is to predict earnings changes, even for seasoned experts. Traditional analysts, armed with additional quarterly data and company management forecasts, achieved a maximum accuracy of 56.7% after six months. Meanwhile, ChatGPT, using the chain-of-thought method, consistently delivered better results.
