Let us take a closer look at common mistakes in violin playing that can significantly hinder progress. As for holding the instrument with the chin, the latter should be adjusted to the length of the student's neck so that the player is able to hold the violin freely and without strain. Those violinists who lower the instrument to their shoulder or place a pillow under it certainly have no idea of the disastrous effect this has on their sound. The violin should always be raised as high as possible to give the hand the greatest freedom in moving from one position to another. This is achieved by gently bringing the left hand close to the chest. Tell us what mistakes you noticed in the video?

If your sound doesn’t feel like it’s ringing, the problem often isn’t pressure. It’s bow distribution. Most violinists use the bow unevenly without realizing it. The arm speeds up, slows down, and the string never gets a consistent vibration. Here’s a simple drill that fixes that. First, imagine the bow divided into four equal parts. Now play martelé strokes, stopping at each quarter of the bow. Start at the frog. Play → stop at the 1/4 Play → stop at the middle Play → stop at the 3/4 Play → stop at the tip Then go back down the bow the same way. Take your time. Feel each section of the bow and keep the sound focused. Once that feels comfortable, add the same idea to a scale. Still think in four equal parts of the bow. Then remove the martelé stops and let the bow move slowly and smoothly, but keep the feeling of those four sections. This teaches your arm how to use the bow evenly. And when the bow moves evenly, the string vibrates better. That’s when the violin really starts to ring. So try that and follow me. P.S. Vibrato is also a very necessary technique for a great sound. I’m thinking about running a free vibrato workshop soon. If you’d like me to do it, comment or DM me VIBRATO and I’ll send details if enough people are interested. #violin #violintechnique #violinteacher #violín #violinist #violinpractice #theviolingym

🎻 Detailed Violin Practice Routine:

1. Tuning (30 seconds

🎻 Detailed Violin Practice Routine: 1. Tuning (30 seconds – 1 minute) - Always start by tuning carefully even if it’s just a quick check. - Make sure each string resonates cleanly; don’t rush through it! 2. Open Strings (3–5 minutes) - Play each open string slowly using full bow strokes. - Keeping the bow straight and parallel to the bridge. - Maintain consistent bow speed and weight. - Listening carefully for a full, resonant sound. - This helps “wake up” the bow arm and settle your posture. 3. Schradieck Exercises (10–15 minutes) - Start slow and even; speed is not important at the beginning. - Bow hand: relaxed fingers, flexible wrist, solid tone. - Left hand: Raise and drop fingers evenly from the same height, keep thumb soft and avoid squeezing the neck. - Aim for even, clean, and ringing notes. - Use a metronome if needed to keep rhythm steady; Gradually increase tempo as control improves.      4. Scales (15–30 minutes) - Major and minor scales relevant to your level. - Intonation: Listen carefully — small adjustments matter! - Shifts: Slow down during shifts; feel and listen for accuracy. - Bow divisions: Practice using whole bow, upper half, and lower half separately. Helps develop control and dynamic range. - Rhythm: Always use a metronome to stay disciplined. 5. Arpeggios (15–30 minutes) - Same focus areas as scales, plus smooth shifting between positions & clean string crossings. - Think of arpeggios as building strength and flexibility for music. 6. Repertoire (Studies & Pieces) - Beginners: 20–30 minutes is good. - Higher levels: 1–2 hours depending on complexity. - Smart practice tips:     ◦    Divide and conquer: Work on small tricky sections, not whole pieces.     ◦    Slow practice: Play difficult passages slowly to correct errors.     ◦    Isolate problems: Find why something isn’t working (e.g., fingerings, shifting, bowing).     ◦    Record yourself: Listen back to catch things you don’t hear while playing.     ◦    Mental practice: Visualize fingerings, shifts, and bowings away from the instrument. ⚡ Golden Rule: “Don’t just repeat — analyze, correct, and then repeat.”
