I’ve finished my pochette project just in time for the Sheffield Sessions Festival this weekend! This little instrument measures less than 50cm from top to bottom, and is my interpretation of the Neil Gow Glasgow model. Shaping the violin linings made of willow wood, distinguished by a warm, slightly reddish tone. The video shows the handcrafting process: first the rough shaping with gouge and knife, carefully following the grain, then the refining with a scraper, and finally sandpaper, to achieve a smooth and even surface ready for assembly. ⭐️Featured Instrument! 🇫🇷 An exquisite violin by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume！ 📜 J.B. Vuillaume was the most influential figure in the violin world of the 19th century. He moved to Paris in 1818 and trained with François Chanot and Lété before establishing his own business in 1827. ⭐️ Vuillaume was a renowned copyist, particularly of Stradivari and Guarneri. His love of old instruments had a strong influence on his work. In 1838 he met Paganini, and subsequently made a number of copies of the ’Cannon‘ Guarneri del Gesu. Although Vuillaume boasted of his skills as a copyist, and allegedly tried to palm Paganini off with a copy of the ’Cannon, his instruments are not easily confused with the originals. In a career spanning over half a century, he and his workshop produced more than 3,000 instruments, and the fact that they exist in such great numbers makes them relatively easy to identify. In addition, the vast majority of them are labelled, branded, numbered and signed as Vuillaume‘s work. I would like to show you an old making-of-Video. At the time (2022), violin maker Pietro Fioramonte was my student at the Mittenwald Violin Making School in Germany. Because he is also a good violinist, I asked him during a break if he could play my miniature violin. In this video, you can see that it is not that easy to play, but he did a fantastic job nonetheless.

TIP OF THE DAY ✨ Lubricate the fine turner with graphite once and a while to keep them easy to turn. Does it ever happen to you that the fine turner gets stiff and hard to adjust? 🎻 Well, this happens because with hours of practice, the rosin’s dust comes from the bow and starts to accumulate in the string and the instrument.
