How to Properly Change and Tune a Violin String? Many beginner violinists are afraid of changing strings on their own – and I completely understand! A poorly installed string can snap, slip, or throw your instrument completely out of tune at the worst possible moment. That’s why in this reel I’ll show you the easiest and safest way to put on a new string and tune your violin step by step. 👉 Step 1 – Lubricate Before putting on a new string, rub the peg with special peg compound or chalk. This will prevent the peg from slipping or getting stuck, making tuning much smoother. 👉 Step 2 – Secure Insert the end of the string into the peg hole and start winding. Make sure the first windings lock the string securely so it won’t slip out. 👉 Step 3 – Attach at the tailpiece Place the other end of the string into the tailpiece fine tuner or slot. Double-check that the ball end is seated correctly so it doesn’t pop out while tuning. 👉 Step 4 – Press & Gently tune Now the most important part! While turning the peg, press it slightly inward – this ensures the string holds and the peg doesn’t slip. When tuning, always do it very gently – it’s better to approach the note gradually than to overtighten and snap the string. With this method your violin will stay tuned stably and without stress. 🎶 💡 If you’re a beginner, always remember – change one string at a time. Your bow isn’t straight — and it’s killing your sound. Here’s why and the fix. Most players don’t realize the bow has to move slightly out on the down-bow and slightly in on the up-bow to stay straight to the bridge. From your point of view, that’s hard to judge — so the bow drifts. The fix: Use a mirror. Let the bridge be your guide, not your eyes (at first). Train the eyes looking at the bow and the feeling of a straight bow instead of forcing control. This is no different than a lifter using a mirror to groove proper form — once the body learns it, you don’t have to think about it as much anymore (you just need to remind yourself).
