The Embassy of Nepal in the United States has urged Nepali citizens residing in the US to strictly comply with American laws and legal procedures, warning that violations could result in the cancellation of visas or green cards. Issuing a public notice, the embassy cautioned Nepalis staying in the US for study, travel, employment, business, or family visits not to illegally depend on welfare facilities meant exclusively for US citizens by providing false or misleading information. The appeal comes in light of stricter visa policies introduced under US President Donald Trump's administration. According to the embassy, US authorities have informed that dependence on government-supported benefits such as subsidized healthcare, housing, family assistance, or educational aid can directly affect an individual's immigration status. The notice also recalled that in 2024, Nepali citizens ranked high among foreign nationals receiving such benefits, prompting the US to temporarily halt immigrant visas for Nepalis. Additionally, due to cases of overstays and unauthorized work, the US government has introduced a visa bond requirement of USD 5,000 to 15,000 for B1/B2 visa applicants, effective from January 21, 2026.
