For each of her signature pieces, Safeyah spends weeks studying the techniques of a fine art master and painting a replica of a classic painting — like Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus — before carefully spray painting the piece with a bold graffiti outline. Although I had once long back introduced myself as an aerospace engineer and a watercolor artist @colourfulmystique who've jumped into mixed media as well, I stopped sharing more about it after that... Because the moment I put it out there, the fear settled in. What if collectors didn’t take me seriously? What if they looked at my work, and thought, let’s support a full-time artist instead, someone whose entire life depended on selling their art? What if, no matter how much I poured into my paintings, I was always seen as someone who had a backup, someone who wasn’t ‘all in’? So I played it safe. I focused on my art. Because deep down, I felt like I had to prove myself. Like I had to work twice as hard to be seen as enough. But the more I tried to fit into what an artist should be, the more I realized, I was limiting myself. I wasn’t just an artist. I wasn’t just an engineer. I was both. Over time, I realized that my art wasn’t less valuable because I had another career. That my dedication wasn’t any less real because I balanced two worlds. That my journey didn’t need to look like anyone else’s to be valid. I used to think that keeping my full story hidden would make me more of an artist. But all it did was make me feel like I was living in fragments. The truth is, I could have quit my job three years ago. My art business was making double my engineering income, and I was only painting one day a week. Imagine what I could have done if I went all in.💭 I didn’t choose between my passions. I chose to embrace them both. And that choice doesn’t make me less of an artist. It makes me exactly the kind of artist I was meant to be. That makes me a 💃🏼Superwoman Artist.✨ And now, I want to be the role model for every artist who feels the same. For the ones with multiple passions. For the ones who love more than one thing and don’t want to give up any part of themselves. You don’t have to choose. You can create a life where all your passions thrive.
