In October, our dancers spent two immersive weeks in the dance studio with Banning Bouldin and Madison Brott of @new_dialect in Nashville as part of an intensive dance residency. The work created during this process will premiere THIS WEEKEND in Moving Voices, our dance concert. We’re so proud to bring this studio journey to the stage! Twenty-three students. A new school record. And a performance that put West Covina on the national stage. Students from the WCHS Performing Arts Academy traveled to Anaheim for the Musical Theater Competitions of America (MTCA) festival, and they didn’t just show up, they showed out. First place went to Allison Luo in Senior Monologue and Mark Balanzar in Technical Theater: Scenic Design. The PAA Showtunes ensemble earned second place for their performance of “We Dance” from Once on This Island, and Celeste Carrillo took second in Senior Solo Vocal. Then it got even bigger. Alice Chung, Jocelin Wang, Celeste Carrillo, and Victoria Noel Arevalo were cast through the festival’s Open Call Audition. Karissa Moreno and Charlyn Badoles performed in a special showcase alongside cast members from the Broadway musical Wicked. And Celeste Carrillo, already having one of the most impressive weekends of any student in the program’s history, was personally selected for a masterclass with the Wicked stars. Beyond competition, students spent the festival immersed in masterclasses and workshops, learning from professionals whose careers span Hollywood and Broadway. Congratulations to every student who competed and to the PAA instructors who prepared them to perform at this level.
