Voltaire (asıl adı François-Marie Arouet), 21 Kasım 1694’te Paris’te doğmuş, 30 Mayıs 1778’de yine Paris’te ölmüş Fransız bir yazar, filozof ve Aydınlanma Çağı’nın en önemli isimlerinden biridir. Kısa ama net hayatı: Gençlik ve sürgün: Sivri dili ve eleştirileri yüzünden genç yaşta başı derde girdi. 1717’de hapse atıldı (Bastille). Daha sonra İngiltere’ye sürgün edildi. Bu sürgün onun düşüncelerini çok etkiledi. Düşünce yapısı: Özgürlük, akıl ve hoşgörüyü savundu. Özellikle: Dinî bağnazlığa karşı çıktı İfade özgürlüğünü savundu Adaletsizliğe karşı yazılar yazdı En bilinen eseri: “Candide” adlı eseri, onun en ünlü kitabıdır. Bu kitapta dünyadaki kötülükleri ve aşırı iyimserliği eleştirir. Krallar ve sarayla ilişkisi: Bir dönem Prusya Kralı II. Frederick’in yanında yaşadı ama sonra araları bozuldu. Son yılları: Hayatının son döneminde Fransa’ya geri döndü ve halk tarafından büyük ilgi gördü. Ölümünden sonra fikirleri daha da yaygınlaştı.
