You are walking on 100 years of history. 🚂👟 It’s hard to believe, but this quiet, paved path used to be a bustling railroad line. The History: From 1895 to 1938, this was the “Wading River Branch” of the LIRR. Steam engines hauled passengers through here every day—including Nikola Tesla, who took this train to get to his laboratory in Shoreham. When the line was abandoned in the late 30s, it became a “Ghost Railroad”—just a sandy path under the power lines known only to locals. The Transformation: Since officially opening in 2022, the North Shore Rail Trail has become a staple of the community. It’s no longer about trains; it’s about connection. It’s 10 miles of paved perfection connecting Mt. Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach, Rocky Point, Shoreham, and Wading River. Whether you are training for a marathon, teaching your kid to ride a bike, or just need a mental health walk... this is the spot. Have you tackled the full 10 miles yet? 👇 #northshorerailtrail #mountsinai #wadingriver #running #walking

15/1/26 Cumberland River read caption A little context- this day there was a prediction of 5-25mm of rain over 24hrs, the area got 180mm in under 6hrs. It wasn’t raining where the campground is nor showing any heavy downpours on the rain radar in surrounding areas. This campsite is in a little to no reception zone but I had been out at the beach an hour prior and checked for severe weather warnings which there were none. We had just finished having lunch when the groundskeeper of the site came around and told us they had received a watch and act notification advising of potential flooding 10 min ago. Sage was asleep in the tent at this time, we made the decision that we would leave but in the space of less than 3 minutes I looked up the river (which is normally only 300mm deep) to see people running and a 10m wide about 1.5-2m high wall of white water and branches already above the bank coming towards us. I yelled to Brooke to get the kids and by the time we got Sage out of the tent it was nearly in the water. I carried all the kids up the next bank and passed them off to some other campers to take to the cabins that were higher and went back to get the car which I drove out in the quickly rising water. Within under 5 minutes the car at the camp next to us floated off, by this time the water had started to head towards all the cabins so we had to seek higher ground again and the only way up was through the bush up the steep hill. As we climbed higher I was able to see where the river met the ocean with cars and caravans getting rolled in the surf. Given the situation everyone there pulled together and helped each other out which was great to see and I am so glad no live were lost which could have easily happened with how quick everything happened. To everyone that helped us out thank you so much especially the ones who stayed with Brooke and comforted our kids as I took off to help anyone else I could

Anyone else a little shook? (volume up!) The river is very powerful any time of year, but especially when the flow is high in the spring months! The latter video was taken in early May on an especially high day. The river level changes daily, so one day it might be roaring like here and the next it’ll be much slower, it totally depends on snow melt! The lowest flow is in the fall when much of the snow melt has already run off the glaciers. The best part about the spring river is that it’s perfect for whitewater kayakers, so you can wave as they go by when you sit on the deck! It’s a level III-V whitewater, so leave it to the experts. We surprised a few because no other home is that close to the river, so I’m sure they were not expecting to see people waving from a deck😅 Thankfully the cabin is built up high on huge concrete blocks (and the river bed is rock, not sand) so there’s no risk of the river getting high enough to reach the cabin! **Disclaimer (ignore the incomplete railing, we hadn’t finished it at that point but it is complete now of course!) #pnw #cabin #washington #northcascades #airbnb #pacificnorthwest #pnwstays #pnwlife #pnwcabins #washingtonstate #nationalpark #northcascadesnationalpark #diablolake #washingtonsnationalparks #nationalparks #cabinlife #cabindesign #cabininthewoods #river #cascaderiver #riverfront #waterfront #solarpower #offgrid #cabinlove #cabindesign #cabinvibes
