Don’t worry, the deep freeze hasn’t hit NYC yet! My first baby and dog solo walk was a success. 🥲🫶🏼 And yes, she can breathe in her cozy bassinet bag. Her face is fully exposed in there even though you can’t see her in the vid. I know getting out for the first time can be daunting but I’m glad I have our first big walk under my belt. Every trip feels like a test with visa applications, interviews, bank statements, endless documents just to enter places where others walk in with nothing but a passport and a smile. And while I’m standing in long embassy lines, I can’t help but notice something deeper: the countries that were once colonized are still trying to rise, still trying to rebuild, still trying to catch up. Meanwhile, the West enjoys the benefits of systems it created, systems that still decide who gets access, who gets mobility, and who gets questioned at the border. Traveling through places with advanced technology, efficient systems, and strong economies makes the contrast even sharper. Then I visit countries that were colonized, and I see the struggles that didn’t start with them, struggles they inherited. Neocolonialism isn’t loud. It’s quiet. It’s in trade, in travel rules, in global narratives, in who gets opportunities and who gets obstacles. And Western privilege? I’ve seen it in real time: • in how easily some people move around the world • in how their passports open doors mine never could • in how they’re treated with trust while I’m treated with suspicion • in how their stories are heard first, believed first, valued first Traveling didn’t just show me beautiful places.
