L E T ‘ S T R Y T H I S ! My super orthopedic surgeon friend @janipuhakka said to me this morning that it’s been almost 5 weeks since my surgery and it’s time to start weight bearing without the crutches. I’m not gonna lie … I was not confident in this at all and it took @rich__lines to just be there so I could hold onto him if I needed to. I would say it was a slight improvement from this morning to when I tried again later on tonight, but trying to hold my hips levelled with the monster of a platform boot is pretty impossible! (Wish I had trainers with high enough platforms.) Don’t run before you can walk is a pretty fitting saying at the moment! Luckily I have my weekly physio with @stronglines_physio on Tuesday. #rehab #walking #boot #brokenankle #strength #learn #learntowalk #physio #progress #startingpoint #ivegotthis #personaltrainer

After an ankle sprain, the right level of immobilization matters. In the early phase, we often need to fully protect the ankle ligaments to allow proper healing. Traditionally, that means a bulky walking boot. But as recovery progresses, controlled motion becomes important. That’s what we like about the TayCo brace 👇 ✔️ Easy to put on ✔️ Lighter and less bulky than a traditional boot ✔️ Can be worn over your shoe ✔️ Hinges can be adjusted to gradually allow plantarflexion/dorsiflexion ✔️ Still blocks inversion/eversion to protect healing ligaments ✔️ Better comfort = better compliance = happier patients The ability to transition from immobilization to controlled mobility can make a big difference in recovery after an ankle sprain. 1️⃣ It protects the surgery you just went through The boot is designed to control motion and limit stress on the repaired area. Walking correctly keeps pressure where it’s supposed to be and prevents setbacks. 2️⃣ It prevents bad habits If you limp, twist, or avoid full contact, your body builds compensation patterns (hips, knees, back). Those habits are HARD to break later and can cause new injuries. 3️⃣ It speeds up your comeback Proper walking = better blood flow, better muscle activation, better gait retraining. The cleaner your mechanics now, the faster you get back to full speed.

“I want to be in a boot!” said no one ever. Except me. But why didn’t I expect the boot to be tricky? And why didn’t I expect this level of weakness and atrophy of my foot, ankle, and leg? I should’ve guessed walking would be hard after not doing it for a month… but at least I’m out of that splint! Air casts, Robo boot, Walking boot- all the same item but what are they used for? A walking boot is designed to immobilize and protect your foot and ankle while you heal from an injury. They help reduce movement, provide support, and offload pressure away from the injury. There are two main types: Tall and Short! Tall Walking boots are used for: - Ankle fractures or sprains - Achilles injuries - Post-op recovery Short Walking boots are used for: -Toe or foot fractures - Sprains not involving the ankle We have both options in store and will help you find the best option for you. #aircastboot #walkingboot #roboboot

The only time you should be prescribed one of these is when you break a bone, or you are recovering from surgery. These are not an appropriate treatment tool for plantar fasciitis, not for an ankle sprain and certainly not for Achilles tendionapthy. This is a fixed, rigid boot, restricting any foot and ankle motion, with the exception of some toe wiggles. Obviously it’s removable, but it’s job it to literally prevent movement when you wear it. When we take away movement at any joint in our bodies, the neighbor-joints take up all the slack. People who wear a boot for an extended period will often talk about hip and lower back pain. They will complain about how the boot changes the way they walk and they have to always be in a shoe and can’t be barefoot on the other foot. It’s annoying, and quite frankly, often prescribed unnecessarily. There are a number of less restrictive options for folks with soft tissue injuries that don’t require immobilization. Unfortunately, wearing a boot for a condition that doesn’t warrant one, can just extend your recovery time and prevent you from getting back to the things you love. If you’ve been prescribed a boot as a ‘last resort’ or maybe even a ‘first resort’ for your ankle sprain or tendonitis, you may not need one, and it may be doing you a disservice.
