I always thought the walking foot was a “quilting only” tool. Then I started using it for my everyday sewing and wow. 🤯 Things started looking neater, seams stopped shifting, and suddenly I felt like I leveled up without learning anything new. It was one of those small changes that makes a big difference. Here is what I learned & noticed right away… • Fabrics feed evenly so nothing stretches or slips under the needle. • Seams stay lined up even on bulky spots and tricky fabrics. • No rippled edges when sewing long seams or attaching binding If you have a walking foot hiding in a drawer somewhere, pull it out and give it a try. It might just become your new everyday best friend like it has for me. Your walking foot needs some love from time to time too! I was working on a quick Christmas project the other day and my walking foot just didn’t seem to be feeding the layers through as well as it usually does. I turned it over and found a build up of lint and probably spray baste over-spray to the point that the rubber feet weren’t grippy at all any more. I started with my seam ripper, but ultimately my finger nail was enough to scrape it off and get me going again. It’s crazy how big of a difference this made - can you believe how much came off?! 😬 I use this poor thing a lot, and so glad this at least was an easy fix! My walking foot has also started squeaking a little lately. Some Google and YouTube searches have found that this #bernina foot can actually be taken apart and oiled. More on that soon. Not taking this apart until I’m done with *all* the Christmas presents… 🤣 Have you taken checked your walking foot lately? I was working on a project and my stitches didn’t do what I wanted them to. 💕 So I called the best Bernina expert I know @lalala.patchwork and she said, don’t you have a walking foot? . Well duhhh (I’m sometimes not to bright!) I always thought it’s one of those complicated tools, that is for ‚quilting only‘ ! Let me tell you, it’s NOT! . ⭐ 1. Layers feed evenly A walking foot has its own set of feed dogs that work in sync with the machine’s feed dogs. This means top and bottom layers move at the same speed, preventing shifting, stretching, or fabric creep. ⭐ 2. Perfect for quilting When quilting, you’re sewing through a quilt top, batting, and backing. A walking foot keeps all three layers aligned, reducing puckers and distortion. It’s essential for beautiful, flat quilting lines. ⭐ 3. Prevents stretching on tricky fabrics It handles fabrics that like to stretch or slip, such as knits, laminates, vinyl, or slippery cottons, much better than a regular presser foot. ⭐ 4. Great for matching prints and seams Because nothing slides out of place, pattern matching (like stripes, plaids, or patchwork seams) becomes much more reliable. ⭐ 5. Helps with binding When attaching quilt binding, especially bulky or multi-layered binding, a walking foot keeps the edge smooth and even. ⭐ 6.
