The Warlis or Varlis are an indigenous tribe or Adivasis, living in Mountainous as well as coastal areas of Maharashtra-Gujarat border and surrounding areas. They speak an unwritten Varli language which belong to the southern zone of the Indo-Aryan languages. Maharashtra is known for its Warli folk paintings. Its roots may be traced to as early as the 10th century A.D. They bear a resemblance to those created in the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka. Scenes portraying hunting, fishing and farming, festivals and dances, trees and animals are used to surround the central theme of the painting. ❤️ #warli #upsc #theindiantrivia #incredibleindia

The Whirling World of the Warlis As we all are so acutely aware, radical change has mutated the globe. The abundance of natural life has depleted and towns, cities and metropolises have mushroomed. Even though these changes have happened, tribal communities still persist, holding on to their way of life, in settlements spanning the length and breadth of India. They are a vital part of the country’s living heritage. The Warlis are an indigenous tribe of people who have lived in Maharashtra for centuries. The community has developed an astonishing set of eco-indicators with the help of which they can predict the coming of the monsoon. The life-support system of the Warli is linked with that of the forest. No wonder then, that their art reflects this bonding with nature. They paint life with an intricacy of detail and an amazingly beautiful way of depicting every aspect that surrounds their daily routine. For the Warlis, time is akin to a circle - with cycles within cycles repeating themselves endlessly. They see themselves as joyous dancers in this time frame. "Pawri"is a wind musical instrument like that of the "Tarpa" of the Warlis. Pawri is made up of a dry gourd, which is about 2 feet long. Flute like hollow bamboo sticks are attached in it with the help ofhoney comb wax. The bamboo sticks are six-inch long with 3 holes on each. Towards the end of these sticks a saxophone like lower part is attatched. This part is made up of spathe of the phoenix sylvester (palm). It is bound with the help of the wax. The difference between Tarpa and Pawri is that, the Tarpa is played by blowing air from the apex of the instrument while Pawri is played from the side, i.e. by blowing air in the middle of the longish gourd. Pawri by traditional cultural norms of the Mavchi is played by male only. Females are not allowed to play Pawri. This is true among the Warlis too. Warli women are not allowed to play Tarpa.#Original #Firstreel
