In a nest is the egg-laying queen, workers with all their siblings, the baby wasp larvae, and food! You would defend your home too if someone kicked down the front door and your butt was equipped with a weapon! But yellowjackets are just trying to survive like everyone and everything else in this world. They are pollinators, pest controllers, decomposers, and even have uses in medical research! • And if I can’t change your mind about yellowjackets from this adorable video with @noahkahanmusic serenading us over it… then I’d like for you to know that most wasps are solitary (aka no large nest with a group) and can’t even sting you. Many people associate these insects with the greatly overreacted sting videos on YouTube, and think of these insects as dangerous animals that could attack at any moment; this is not how these animals truly behave. The tarantula hawk is a solitary and shy species of wasp found throughout much of the new world where tarantulas are present. They use their large size and paralyzing venom to capture tarantulas in which they rear their larvae. While many people claim these to have an excruciating sting, the THREE separate INTENTIONAL stings I have taken have ALL been underwhelming and not all that painful. Wasps of all kinds are incredibly important at maintaining the health of the ecosystems they belong to, and they don’t deserve the hate they often receive!
