Ollas have been used for thousands of years in dry climates to water plants slowly and deeply. 💦 They’re unglazed clay pots buried in the soil, releasing moisture through its porous surface, only when the soil dries out. I’ve used them in both raised beds and containers to irrigate my crops, especially when I’m traveling or away from my garden for a week. Place a plastic tray in a sheltered area of your garden out of direct sun and fill it with water. Hand-watering may not be this extreme, but it’s great for beginner gardeners! 🚿⁣ ⁣ Why?⁣ ⁣ Because it forces you to spend time and engage with your plants. If everything in your garden was on a drip irrigation system, you would not need to go out there and water. With less time in your garden, the fewer opportunities you will have to observe your plants, identify problems and understand their growth patterns 🌿⁣

You think you watered enough. You didn’t. I watered this for 15 seconds. Surface looked wet. Thought I was done. Mixed it with a shovel. Dust everywhere. Bone dry underneath. Water gets trapped in the top layer. Never makes it to the roots. Happens all the time in spring when soil is still dry from winter. Happens more in summer when heat pulls moisture out fast. Water deeply. Slow and steady. Let it soak in, wait, water again. Get past the top layer. Your plants will tell you if they’re not getting enough, they’ll wilt even though you just watered. Dunking is a very efficient method of watering plants. Simply fill a bucket with some water and place your pots in the bucket to rehydrate. As the water will start replacing air gathered in the pot, you’ll see baubles coming from the plant up to the surface of the water.  When the bubbles stop, it means that  the plant had a proper drink and it’s time for it to be placed on a saucer. This method of watering is very environmentally friendly and will reduce usage of water especially in a time of droughts.
