Most engineers fight S’s the wrong way. Dark vocals aren’t the answer. Rolling off top end just hides clarity. The goal isn’t to remove S’s. It’s to control them in stages. A de-esser before compression keeps the compressor from reacting to harsh spikes. A second light one after compression catches what was brought forward. Two light touches > one heavy-handed fix. If you are mixing in a fixed install venue every week, starting from a template that is 90% ready to go is the key to speed + quality and your team will definitely thank you. My show file is setup in a way that I set gain into the yellow and I’m 90% there with my sound. Elements change but a good balance doesn’t have to! As this musical drop out became more common in a lot of worship songs, I realized you could keep all the energy of the part before simply by adding additional low end back into the mix to fill the missing gap of the kick! Here’s my 6-step process for transitioning between songs smoothly (no snapshots!): 1️⃣ Do my little dance 2️⃣ Change panning for the current and next lead vocal 3️⃣ Lower the delay COMPLETELY and leave about 20% verb on the vocals 4️⃣ Lower the guitars and make sure keys are audible under the vocals for speaking moments 5️⃣ Change vocal tuning and double-check mic panning AGAIN 6️⃣ Walk the room to check how others are hearing the mix.
