The process of making a brass ring using the lost wax jewellery making technique 👇 1️⃣ Sculpt and carve your design in wax using a soldering iron, wax tools, and files. 2️⃣ Send your finished wax models to a casting facility, where they pour molten metal (silver, gold, etc.) to transform your wax into metal. 3️⃣ Receive your raw silver or gold castings back from the caster. 4️⃣ Refine your jewellery: remove sprues, sand, polish, and set any stones. Wrap a piece of paper around your ring mandrel to work on when you melt wax to build up a ring. Once the ring is done, you can slide the paper off the mandrel. Carefully bend the paper inwards to release it from the wax and slide the paper out. Easy peasy!

Wax carving is an essential part of any bench jeweller’s repertoire of skills. Bringing a sculptural, 3D quality to the work it is perfect for creating pieces such as signet or domed rings*. Once carved, the wax form is cast into the desired metal using the lost wax casting process. As a one off piece, it would then be polished and finished, but if duplicates are being made then a rubber mold is created, additional waxes produced which are, in turn cast in the same way the original wax. Then I cast into either solid gold or sterling silver making sure all the stones are removed first. To remove a stuck ring without cutting it off, a string or a piece of floss works best. I like to use waxed floss as I think it helps grip the finger and the ring. First, put one end under the ring towards the wrist, then with the other end tightly wrap the finger from below the knuckle all the way over the knuckle to compress the swelling as much as possible. Next, pull the wrist side of the floss and unwind it towards the finger tip and the ring will slowly but surely make its way off the finger.
