I’ve always been a car guy, and I recently had the opportunity to test drive—or test ride, I guess—an autonomous vehicle made by Wayve.

You may have heard of Waymo, the company placing fully-automated, self-driving robotaxis in over ten U.S. cities. London-based startup Wayve is hoping to bring partial automation to almost any modern car. If Wayve does get its software on the road, it may soon be driving all over the world. However, the startup has yet to prove itself in a widespread deployment. TIME reporter Nikita Ostrovsky explains how Wayve differs from Waymo and how the company intends to spread. Wayve is a London-based startup founded in 2017 that is developing AI-driven self-driving technology using what it calls “Embodied AI.” Instead of relying on detailed maps and hand-coded rules, Wayve’s system learns from camera video and driving experience to generalize across different environments. It has raised over $1.3 billion in funding from big investors like SoftBank, Microsoft and Nvidia. Wayve is also partnering with Uber to run Level 4 driverless trials in London, aiming to bring fully autonomous robotaxi services to real roads starting around 2026. . . . . .
