Finished this coiled basket! I used 1/2 inch filler cord, 5mm braided macrame cord, and my new chunky confetti yarn. Just so you have an idea of how much yarn comes in the little mini bundles, I used two mini bundles for this basket and got a pop of accent toward the bottom plus the entire top row. The thing with a square coiled basket is you really need to use a different filler cord than the one I normally use, either thinner or softer, because it takes a lot more shaping to get those curves that create the square look. I’m hoping this one ends up at least somewhat square. I’ve been asked for a square basket for a couple of years now. Start a new coiled basket with me! People often struggle when starting a coiled basket because this part can be a little tougher on the hands, and sometimes those white gaps show through where the filler cord peeks out. That’s totally normal. The key is wrapping nice and tight and being intentional about where you place your wraps so they fully cover the filler cord. As you can see in the video, I did have a bit of filler cord showing at first, but I simply placed my double wraps or long stitches in a way that covered those spots. The result looks beautiful, and you would never even know those gaps were there. Next time you’re using 5mm braided macrame cord, try tapering both ends before adding a new piece. It helps reduce bulk and creates a smoother transition. I usually work with really long pieces of cord to avoid adding new pieces too often, since bulk can build up fast with 5mm.
