At the Mehta Silk Museum in Varanasi, we learn about the tradition of silk weaving from owner Ashish Mehta. All of the silks here are hand woven on manual looms — some of them hundreds of years old. The weavers use colorful threads often intertwined with gold. The techniques have been passed down through generations. Varanasi is famous for its handmade silks, and we can see why. In the showroom, Mehta wows us with luscious silk bedspreads, wall hangings, saris and scarves. In the little village of Montsegur, there resides a talented weaver from Belgium who can weave anything from dog fur, to human hair and even plants like Hemp. Yup that’s right !!! Hemp is illegal in Singapore so even if it’s a nice top I wouldn’t take the risk of being charged for trafficking. All her stuff are handmade. Baya weavers are the architects of their own world. Native to South and Southeast Asia, Baya weavers are most well-known for being the weavers of pendulous nests. Male birds use their beaks to strip and collect the strands of paddy leaves, rough grasses, and palm strips, and then weave and knot them together in order to attract a mate.
