Today, we’re shifting our focus from the traditional Beart Mhòr (wooden loom) to the Bonas Griffiths double width loom, to highlight an essential and intricate part of the weaving process: tying in. When a weaver receives a new warp, all 1400 individual threads are hand-tied onto the previous piece of work. These knots are passed carefully through each heddle eye, bringing the new warp colours into position for weaving. The weaver’s previous piece of work can then be removed from the loom. In this video, you can see it being passed underneath the new warp, then folded ready for collection by the mill. Weavers must be not only mechanically skilled but also be incredibly patient, as this intricate process can take many hours!
