Yesterday we went on a big socialization adventure with the last two puppies before they went home. One man said … “This must be a you barely have to socialization because look at them.” This comment is a testament to the work we put into these puppies. This breed is in fact NOT a breed you don’t have to socialize it’s the opposite. Early socialization is incredibly important in this breed and the younger the better. We safely bring these puppies on outings to new environments regularly from a young age. But if we look even further into purebred vs back yard bred, purposefully bred, and preservation breeding! We can really start to see where intentional breeding matters! And is VERY important to how a dog will take in and experience the world! If you know dog behavior, it should be very easy to spot, but if you are less familiar with it, look closely at how each of the girls are interacting with a new environment! Maze my well bred Doberman is curious, exploring, and happily interacting with her new environment and surroundings, while my rescue Vega (a Dutch Malinois mix) is cautious, almost hesitant until she’s sure enough to engage! Now Vega is older (18 months) than Maze (13 months) and the hormonal elements of their age are also to be noted, considering they both in a fear periods, showing how each dog recovers or handles these situations is important to know! They’ve had very similar upbringings with training, socialization, diet, exercise, etc. Again showcasing how Maze at a young age is more stable than Vega is simply because of their genetics! The nuances of understanding the impact of these behavioral differences is the start of a bigger conversations, like dog overpopulation, euthanasia numbers, and dogs born with intentional deformities. Being aware of proper and ethical breeding practices are crucial for reducing or eliminating the numbers of dogs in shelters! If we were held responsible for the lives we bring into the world then there would be no shelter crisis. I think the conversation of backyard breeding is way bigger than “oh yeah that shouldn’t happen” or “it’s bad”! It is the sole reason for the overpopulation of dogs. Greed is a sickness. And humans have let it spread and spread. It’s disgusting.
