Too many good horses out there... (story below). I happened to see a video of this horse that was very concerning. The owner, an older woman in her 80’s was originally planning on riding it herself. Thank God she was local and I was able to come do an evaluation session in person…. I do offer virtual lessons and horse training consultations, but I am picky on who I work with. Business owners in this industry know; if you get hurt, you can’t make a living. Unfortunately (based off the video) I had a feeling it was going to go the way it did. Before I am willing to swing a leg over; they better have a good brain, decent confirmation, be sound and pass my evaluation (I don’t just run/train barrels). My specific protocol has been developed after a lifetime time of working with these animals. I make tweaks the more I learn (you never arrive as a trainer). Weight in the stirrup was the last step of my eval for the day. He passed with flying colors on everything else. Previously bad training and abuse (serious scar tissue told that story), created this learned behavior. Very Dangerous…. and before anyone starts in: he had a clean bill of health confirmed by professionals. Luckily for this horse, it’s a happy ending. He found a family who is willing to love him as a pasture ornament for the rest of his life. They are wise, good people, who understand not all horses are worth the risk.
