When you mix your own shades, you’re not just changing the hue, you’re also subtly reducing the saturation. That fresh color straight out of the tube? Maximum intensity. Maximum chroma. But once you start mixing, even carefully, the vibrancy drops just a little. And that’s not a mistake. That’s color science. The real skill is knowing when to use pure intensity and when to control it with mixed tones. Save this if you’re learning color. Colour theory made simple! Let’s talk colour groups first. There can be other colour groups too but these are what were mentioned in my lecture Complimentary: opposites Triadic: 3 colours equally distanced Tetradic: 4 colours equally distanced (this can also be known as the square group) Split complimentary: 1 main colour, 2 that are either side of the complimentary Analogue: 3 colours next to each other, adjacent (Monochramtic is 1 single colour)#artist #art #artistoninstagram #artlovers #artprocess #painting #paint

Debunking Colour theory in 5 points. Prove me wrong in comments: ⭐ the colour wheel does work amazingly as a map for colours and colour theory is like navigation for the map in telling how you might mix a colour effectively or what colours might work in harmony but the true mastery lies in breaking away from colour matching and shifting your focus to the balance of colours. (Sorta depends on style too. nothing wrong with colour matching just tad bit boring) ⭐colour is a lie. you can go in with any colour as long as your values are correct. ⭐even the rule of value is not set in stone as long as you're getting the overall balance if lights and darks right. ⭐colour theory is just another term for colour harmony, really. It's just guidelines for colour preference and not set in stone. Otherwise it'd be called "colour theorem" I suppose. It can't be proved, just a concept. ⭐Colour theory has unnecessarily boggled people for too long and I was okay skipping it's lecture in art school. I know this ain't a point but anywho you can have a go at me in comments and I'll actually listen because — I did not attend it's class.😌 #colourtheory #arttipsandtricks #sketchbookart

This Monday we are mixing together: - cadmium (free) yellow light - pyrrole orange - deep violet This is the palette for you if you want a lot of warm, berry purples, dusky pinks, peach, and some nice contrasting green gold. You won’t get any blues or greens here since we aren’t using a traditional primary color palette on this one. Happy mixing! #colormixing #colortheory #colorpalette

Making a color chart can be a great exercise when studying color and exploring how your own palette looks when combined with a single color, plus white. I’ve added Cadmium Yellow Pale and Titanium White to each of my mixtures in this chart. #color #colors #colorful #mix #painting

Color properties are NOT equal in their importance: 🥇 - VALUE: how dark or light is the color 🥈 - CHROMA: how saturated or gray is the color 🥉 - HUE: placement of the color on the wheel Hope this clears it up! Video by Ken Goshen #color #colormixing #values #chroma #shadow #hue #arttutorial

Okay but tell me why Purple and Yellow had a whole relationship arc in this reel. 💜💛 First they’re hyping each other up… “You make me POP.” “You’re so vibrant next to me.” Because YES. Complementary colors (hello color theory 👋) live opposite each other on the color wheel for a reason. Side by side? Electric. High contrast. Total main character energy in your painting. Then they decide to “blend.” And suddenly… we’ve entered the muddy brown era. 😂 Here’s your art lesson moment: Complementary colors intensify each other when they sit next to each other. But when you mix them, they neutralize. Which is actually powerful when you want: • Softer shadows • More realistic depth • Tamed intensity • Balanced color in your paintings It’s not that they don’t get along… they just need boundaries. 😉 If you’ve ever mixed two beautiful colors and whispered “why though?” this one’s for you. Save this for your next art session and share it with your favorite art friend who needs a little color theory drama in their life. 🎨✨ #ColorTheory #ArtTips #PaintingTips #LearnArt #ArtistHumor

How do I know which colors to use in a painting? I don’t pick color schemes at random. I start by asking these three things: 1. What’s the subject? The subject already decides a lot. 2. What’s the story or motif? The same subject can change color depending on context. For example, a mountain at night, daylight, or sunset will all require very different colors. 3. What’s the mood?Want it more bold and dramatic? Use stronger contrast and clearer separation. Want it calm and introspective? Use subtler color and softer transitions. I never choose a color scheme without considering these questions first. If color still feels confusing, gaining control over your palette is exactly what we teach step by step inside Apelles Palette Essentials. 👉 Comment “palette” and I’ll send you more info.

Today I’m just talking about colours and the colour wheel and how complementary colours work together in your painting. Sometimes we can get confused about which colours to use so it’s very easy to just check your colour wheel, find the colour you’re using and see the complimentary colour right below. You can make a simple one yourself or how to make one from the Internet and just draw it yourself or you can just buy one in an art shop or from Amazon whatever but basically you just do what I’m showing you above how to find the colour you’re using and the complimentary colours. Also, there are colours called tertiary colours but that’s another post . okay happy painting I don’t don’t feel free to message me if you have any questions on colours or paintings.

Want to make almost any color combination work, even when the colors feel really different? The secret is in the mixing. When each color holds just a tiny hint of the others, they start to relate and feel like they belong together. Try it by letting a little of each color show up in the others and watch what happens. What once felt like it might clash suddenly feels connected and alive. Because when colors connect, they sing.
